Bọ chét là loài không có cánh, tên chung để gọi chúng là Siphonaptera. Bọ chét sống kí sinh bên ngoài nhờ hút máu của những động vật máu nóng có vú và loài chim. Có tới trên 2.200 loài bọ chét. Trong số đó có những loài mà chúng ta thường gặp là: Bọ chét mèo: Ctenocephalides felis. Bọ chét chó : Ctenocephalides canis. Bọ chét người: Pulex irrtans. Việc hiểu biết về các loài bọ chét là rất quan trọng, giúp chúng ta nắm được sự mật độ phân bố của chúng trên thể giới cũng như khả năng gây bệnh và truyền bệnh của chúng. Từ đó có những biện phá tiêu diệt bọ chét một cách nhanh chóng và hiệu quả.

1.Chu kỳ và môi trường sống của bọ chét:

Bọ chét là loài ký sinh trùng biến thái hoàn toàn. Vòng đời của bọ chét khoảng 20 đến 35 ngày phụ thuộc vào nhiệt độ và độ ẩm của môi trường. Bọ chét phát triển mạnh trong điều kiện nóng ẩm. Ở môi trường trong nhà bọ chét có thể sinh sản quanh năm. Cuộc đời của bọ chét chia làm 3 giai đoạn: Giai đoạn ấu trùng, giai đoạn nhộng và giai đoạn trưởng thành.

Ấu trùng bọ chét có thể kéo dài thời gian phát triển trên 6 tháng trong điều kiện không thuận lợi. Chúng sống ở các kẽ sàn nhà, ga trải giường, thảm và ở chỗ ngủ của động vật. Chúng không có chân mà chuyển động nhờ lông cứng trên cơ thể. Bọ chét trưởng thành có kích thước nhỏ, dài khoảng 1,5-3,3mm, màu đỏ thẫm hoặc đen, đôi chân sau thay đổi, dài, to mập để nhảy. Bọ chét trưởng thành có thể nhảy cao đến 18 cm và xa đến 33cm. Chúng có thân dẹt ở hai bên, lưng có gai hướng về phía sau khiến hoạt động của chúng chỉ tiến về phía trước xuyên vào lông, tóc của vật chủ và giúp chúng không bị tuột ra ngoài. Tuỳ vào điều kiện của môi trường, bọ chét trưởng thành có thể ở trong kén tới 5 tháng để chờ vật chủ thích hợp.

2. Gây bệnh và truyền bệnh

Bọ chét đốt người, để hút máu ngây bệnh sẩn ngứa, ở Việt Nam thường gặp bọ chét chó và bọ chét mèo. Thương tổn là các sẩn huyết thanh, kích thước 1-2mm, gờ cao hơn mặt da, đỉnh chóp sẩn có mụn nước nhỏ, rất ngứa. Những trường hợp phản ứng mạnh có thể thấy hiện tượng viêm tấy đỏ lan toả xung quanh sẩn. Thương tổn thường gặp ở phần da hở hoặc ở những vùng da tiếp súc trực tiếp với con vật khi người ta ôm, bế chúng như: Vùng cổ, mặt, tay, chân, vùng quanh thắt lưng.

3. Phương pháp phòng tránh và điều trị:
